As with all things, there is no "one right way" to begin a career in make-up artistry. But as a guide, here are a few suggestions:

Read books like "The Technique of the Professional Make-up Artist" and "Stage Make-up". For a complete list of recommended books, click on our books link.

Participate in technical workshops.

Practice as much as possible.

Volunteer to work for no pay on student and independent film projects.

Go to trade shows, read the mags, keep up with the industry.

Enter fantasy competitions.

Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer.

Do as many TFP (time for prints) shoots with models and photographers in your area as you can.

Use the credits and portfolio pictures you obtain to pursue paid work in your area through film commissions and other resources.

Seek work on projects that match your interests, experience and proficiency level.
